Author applications for 2020 are now closed
What kind of literacy program can truly engage and excite young readers? AIBF’s Authors in Schools program not only aims to put a book in the hand of every student in Nassau County, Florida, but also place the book’s author right in front of them in their own classroom or school auditorium.
In 2019, authors selected for the program included New York Times best-selling authors and award-winning authors of note. Twenty-seven different authors presented to more than 12,000 students at 16 Nassau County public schools, five Volunteer pre-kindergarten programs and one private school.
Through event ticket sales and the generosity of sponsors, donors, and members, AIBF purchased 12,300 books for students. AIBF is grateful to school representatives for coordinating their participation, and to the authors, donors and volunteers who make it possible to bring a stimulating, personal educational experience to every student in our community.
Each year starting in July, authors may apply to be considered as an in-school presenter. There is no cost to apply. Applications are accepted until the end of September. Then, the educators meet to review the books and authors who have been submitted, and to select those they believe will fit best with their student curriculum and interests.
The book festival buys selected books for each of the students. The festival does not pay an honorarium, nor for transportation or accommodation of selected authors. It is recommended that selected authors also register for a paid space in the festival's Author Expo that takes place the following day.
We urge all applicants to read the instructions carefully and adhere to our requirements. An Authors in Schools presenter MUST be available for the entire day, and present to as many students, sessions or classes as the school may require during the hours of 9 am to 3 pm.
