The Amelia Island Book Festival is proud to follow up on our successful 2021 luncheon and welcome New York Times bestselling Author Kristin Harmel to the Island this October 27th!

After publishing a dozen novels, Kristin Harmel made her New York Times bestseller debut with The Book of Lost Names (July 2020), which was praised as a “heart-stopping take of survival and heroism” by People Magazine. Once again showcasing her gift for capturing the resilience of the human spirit and inspired by incredible true stories of survival against staggering odds, she returns with THE FOREST OF VANISHING STARS.

In THE FOREST OF VANISHING STARS, Harmel introduces a young woman who was stolen from her wealthy German parents and raised in the unforgiving wilderness of eastern Europe. When she finds herself alone in 1941 after her kidnapper dies, her solitary existence is interrupted as she happens upon a group of Jews fleeing the Nazi terror.

Inspired by real groups of Jewish refugees who hid in the forests to escape persecution during World War II, Harmel incorporates historical elements in her novel including what the forest refugees would have eaten, the way they sheltered, and the way they fought back. In her research, Harmel interviewed Aron Bielski, who along with his brothers led a group of Jewish refugees for two years, deeper into the forest, ultimately surviving the war—and served as inspiration for the film Defiance, starring Daniel Craig.

Kristin Harmel is the New York Times, USA Today, and #1 international bestselling author of The Book of Lost Names, The Winemaker’s Wife, and a dozen other novels that have been translated into twenty-eight languages. A former reporter for People Magazine, her favorite stories were the “Heroes Among Us” features—tales of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. She is also the cofounder and cohost of the popular web series, Friends and Fiction. She lives in Orlando, Florida.
