Set sail on your writing journey at the Amelia Island Book Festival Writer’s Circle Fall Workshop! “Steering the Craft: A 21st-Century Guide to Sailing the Sea of Story” by Ursela Le Guin will be used to steer this engaging, hands-on afternoon designed to help writers strengthen their craft, find their voice, and navigate the challenges of bringing a story to life. Whether you’re just beginning a novel or memoir or already deep into your manuscript, you’ll gain practical insights into hooks, point of view, powerful language, plotting, character development, and the writing process—then put those ideas into action through guided writing prompts and lively group discussion.

Your Instructors
Jonathan M. Bryant is a well-known professional historian, holding both a J.D. and a Ph.D. He built a successful academic career in non-fiction, including numerous essays, articles in anthologies, and two prizewinning books. Dark Places of the Earth: The Voyage of the Slave Ship Antelope, published by Liveright/W. W. Norton was a finalist for the 2016 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in History. His most recent book, The Consulting Agent: Neutrality Act was published in January of 2026.
Donna Lee Overly holds a BA from the University of Texas and has been the Group Leader for the Amelia Island Writers for the past 4 years. She has published 9 books in multiple genres such as contemporary women’s fiction, self-help, historical fiction, and a children’s book which she also illustrated.
